Driving Licenses

The legal driving age is 17 years, when youth can obtain a learner’s permit from the Land Transport Authority. Potential drivers must pass a sight test, theory test and a practical driving examination before they can be given provisional licences.
The theory test is basically memory recall based on the Fiji Road Code – a book published by the Land Transport Authority. The practical test is conducted by LTA driving test officials. All those undergoing tests bring their own cars and must be driven to the venue by a licensed driver.
Those who pass the tests and are granted a licence are placed on what could be considered probation for around two years. During that period they must place an LTA-issued red P sticker on any vehicle they are licensed to drive.
LTA also issues international licences that are acceptable in most Commonwealth countries. This is given in the form of a book for a set fee. It is always advisable though to check with authorities in the country in which you will use the international licence to ensure you do not end up in official strife.
