Taxis
Updated: Monday, February 18, 2008
Taxis are inexpensive and plentiful. In some parts of the country to the west, you should negotiate the price prior to the journey. In Lautoka, it's generally $3 from one end of town to one of the suburbs - though this can change willy-nilly. Your hotel will be able to give you a rough cost estimate for the journey.
Otherwise, if you're travelling in the capital city of Suva, all taxis are required to have mechanical or electronic meters. Lucky for you if they don't, as you qualify to debate your fare. Taxis wait at taxi stands or can be flagged down on the street. If you require that a taxi waits for you, expect to pay an extra charge - but this could around 50 cents. Also make sure you have small change to pay for the cost of the fare. Taxi drivers generally carry very little change (or so they say), and you'll be subject to some colourful language if you're presenting big money for short runs.
