Taxis in Fiji are relatively cheap and readily available.

There are two types of taxi meters – mechanical and electronic both of which have a basic flag fall of $1.00 (which is the amount that the meter starts from when you get in the taxi).

For mechanical meters, 10 cents is added to the flag fall after every 230 metres. For electronic meters or those taxis which don’t have meters, 14.2 cents is added to the fare for the first 250 metres and then 10.7 cents for every 250 metres after that.

These fares vary under certain conditions including taxis that operate outside Viti Levu (an extra 5 cents), for waiting time (25 cents for every 5 minutes of waiting time), night journeys (an extra 50 cents between 10pm and 6am) and for toll and ferry charges.

No charge under two conditions:

By law, the driver cannot charge the passenger for any delays caused by shortage of petrol or diesel, accident or mechanical or other defects which are within the power of the driver to prevent.

As well, the passenger cannot be charged for any delays caused by instructions of police or other authorised traffic officers.

When does the meter start running?

A taxi driver cannot charge a passenger for the journey of the taxi to the specified pick-up place. But when the taxi does arrive, drivers are obliged by law to do the following:

• On arrival at the pick-up point, the driver must personally give the hirer reasonable notice of the arrival of the taxi;
• The driver can then start the taxi meter even if the person is not in the vehicle.
