Ferry Services
Updated: Monday, February 18, 2008
If you've got a bit of time on your hands - or often as not if you simply can't afford the airfare - ferry services are one of the best ways to take in the beauty of the islands.
Most offshore islands are serviced by various shipping and ferry agencies. The Mamanuca and Yasawa islands are serviced by daily ferries/fast catamarans departing from Port Denarau near Nadi. Fast catamarans to the Mamanuca Islands depart three times daily.
Patterson’s Ferry, MV Sullivan and Consort Shipping run regular services to Vanua Levu departing from Suva, Natovi Jetty (north of Suva), Ellington Wharf (Rakiraki).
Kadavu Shipping and Western Shipping provide weekly services between Suva and Kadavu which transfer passengers and cargo.
Please be very aware of the risks you take if travelling on any other unlicensed boats whose operators run small boats back and forth to the islands. There have been accidents that have occurred at sea on such vessels which generally do not carry safety or communication equipment. That being said, small boats are the mode of transport for many villagers going back and forth from the mainland to the small islands.
Another point to note is that though ferry services do offer to transport vehicles, this is often expensive. It would be worthwhile to check out whether rental car services are available at your destination and at what cost - and then compare that to the cost of ferrying your own vehicle across from your departure point.
