Is Fiji safe?
Updated: Monday, February 18, 2008
Despite its somewhat turbulent political history, Fiji continues to be safer than downtown Auckland on a Friday night (and that’s according to a former All-Black!).
Okay, the country’s interim government did declare New Zealand’s top civil servant in Fiji persona non grata (which is like the biggest insult ever in the diplomatic world!). But the level of threat? Think mouse and elephant. Yes, Fiji’s entire population is smaller than the population of Auckland...
That being said, it is not a good idea for normal people to walk down a dark alley at night or to leave valuables lying around near an open window. In fact many homes favour locally-produced steel and iron bars across windows as deterrents to would-be petty criminals. Hotels generally provide room safes or safe deposit boxes – the same as provided by any good hotel around the world.
So yes, throwing all safety precautions to the wind would be downright irresponsible (as it is anywhere in the world). And yes, for the most part, commonsense is the best approach.
