Vanua Levu

Updated: Friday, April 25, 2008

Nightlife in the northern parts of the Fiji Islands is what you’d call ‘limited’.

In the main centre of Labasa (the capital of the North), there’s only 1 licensed Night-club, namely Bounty Night Club.

Because it’s the only nightclub in the town, you can expect a mixture of patrons in various stages of inebriation. It might not be the ideal place for a person of the fairer sex after a big rugby match. That's when testosterone is at a high, some drowning their sorrows at losing the match while others  celebrate their winnings. That's why they created Ladies Nite on Wednesdays (possibly to make up for any insults they may have suffered on Rugby nights). Admission is generally FJD$5, but when the club hosts special events ticket prices can range from FJD$5 to $15. As with all other nightspots in Fiji, the club is closed on Sundays. The owners must be very patriotic though, because they only sell local beer and spirits, at the regular price of course. So don't go asking for margaritas or illusions because you'll get a blank look in response.

Then there's the Grand Eastern Hotel and the Friendly North Inn, both of which have been regular hosts to some of the town's wildest parties. Both places are out of the town area so patrons sometimes cut free of their inhibitions.

Uroscious Night Club in Savusavu is frequented by staff from hotels and resorts in the area that knock off from doing the night shift. It's very popular. Apart from that, Savusavu and Taveuni are renowned hosts to some of the best beach parties in the country. In fact, some say beach parties are events just waiting to happen every weekend.

If you’re really craving for local beer in Savusavu, check out the Tavern at the Copra Shed. It's all they sell, plus a few of the local spirits too.

Planters Club is locally-owned and beers are affordable. There’s good music here and the crowd well-toned. It's a member's bar though so get to know a local real quick.

Regular dances are organised at the Savusavu Hotsprings Hotel, so if you’re new in town and looking for an easy place to party and crash at the same time, this is your spot.

Apart from the limitation of finding a proper club to hang out in, the resorts and accommodation providers in the region have small bars and pubs that organise the odd dance or two, which always prove enticing to locals and visitors alike.
