Starring: Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Shilpa Shetty, Katrina Keif and Kiron Kher

Apne revolves around the disappointments of Baldev (Dharmendra) whose dream of becoming India’s 1st World Heavyweight Boxing Champion is shattered when he is wrongfully blamed for substance abuse and banned from the sport.

He then vows that his eldest son Angad (Sunny Deol) will redeem his name and honour by winning the heavyweight title. But things don’t turn out as planned and Baldev begins to resent Angad. His younger son, Karan (Bobby Deol) who longs to be a rockstar takes on his father’s dreams. Here again, when it seems that glory and redemption are finally at hand, disaster strikes.

Dharmendra as always, puts in a sterling performance and does an amazing job in bringing Baldev to life. The strains on the family, brought on by Baldev’s long burning anger, are very evident and reflect a situation almost every family goes through. Sunny and Bobby also do justice to their characters once they step into the ring.

Most of the boxing shots are pretty real…leaves you thinking “that’s gotta hurt” and the use of computer graphics is also quite intelligent.

However, Apne like most other movies fails to address the minor details which only add to the viewer’s frustrations. For example, during a boxing match, one of the opponent’s does something similar to what Mike Tyson did to Evander Holyfield’s ear, and gets away with it. For a movie based on boxing, there is very little of it until the end. Beating the odds, while the hallmark of Bollywood, leaves little surprise in the movie. And as with most new releases, the women in the movie play a very minor role, if any at all.

The sound-track is better left unmentioned.
