To tip, or not to tip?

Updated: Monday, February 18, 2008

Ah yes, you will be pleased to know that obligatory tipping - that American tradition that has seeped into Australian and New Zealand restaurants - has not made it to Fiji!

You should exercise your own judgement in restaurants... If the food and service has blown you away, by all means tip them - and tip them big!

But the point is you are not obliged to do so - which has always been the irritating thing about restaurants in the US where waiters believe they have earned their 15 per cent tip simply by directing you to your seat!

Here's a handy tip (no pun intended) if you are averse to tipping: You might want to reconsider that stance in nightclubs - where leaving a dollar or the rest of your loose change on the waiter's tray will just about guarantee you the undivided attention of said waiter and a stress-free evening!
