Suva Market
Updated: Monday, February 18, 2008
A rainbow of colours, the freshest of tropical fruit and vegetables, several languages heard at once, light, open and airy ... Welcome to the Suva Market! Without a doubt this place rates highly on the to-do list of any visitor to Suva - not so much for its tourist value but because it offers, all at once, the throbbing of the real Fiji. Located just off the main wharf and next to the city's big bus station, the Suva Market is probably the largest retail produce market in the South Pacific islands. It is always a hive of activity, noise, smells and life ... with vegetable and other food variety stalls downstairs and a kava hall upstairs.
A large variety of tropical produce can be picked up here for extremely low prices. There's a colourful range of fruits, root crops, vegetables, seafood and spices. It is a great place to buy and taste Fiji's multicultural flavour. The market is always busiest on Friday afternoons and throughout most of Saturday (incidentally most people consider early Saturday morning as the best time to grab some of the freshest local seafood straight off the boat to the market's racks).
A tad chaotic at rush-hour, the atmosphere is nonetheless friendly as buyers bargain with vendors for a few cents more value.
Tip: Some people swear by the market at late afternoon for real bargains because that's when vendors simply want to clear their shelves and close up for the day.
