In 1995, the Fiji Ecotourism Association was formed to bring together groups pursuing ecological, historical, cultural, nature-based and adventure-based tourism activities.
A Code of Ethics was drawn up and an accreditation system drawn up to recognize legitimate ecotourism operators.
The group also looked to implement a system to recognise achievements towards international best practice by members of the tourism industry in environmental and social responsibility.
Its goal is to encourage tourism involving sustainable use of natural resources, help locals become more involved in ecotourism related activities and monitor tourism activities that involve artistic traditions of Fiji.
The Fiji Ecotourism Association’s membership has been steadily increasing with the grown in Fiji’s tourist numbers.
