Cycling

Updated: Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Fiji’s beautiful scenery makes it ideal for cycling. However, be warned that some of its roads (and the manners of some drivers) leave a lot to be desired.

For those who want a leisurely cycle, there are extremely serene and scenic stretches along southern Vanua Levu as well as on Taveuni in the North of Fiji. The main island of Viti Levu also has a beautiful coastline along which the main highway generally follows. Though there are two highways that join to encircle Viti Levu, some parts of the Kings Road are being upgraded and are therefore difficult terrain to cycle through.

It is important when cycling in and around the main islands to remember that vehicle drivers are not always courteous towards each other – and thus sometimes even less so towards cyclists. This is particularly true along the main Queen’s Highway on Viti Levu which joins the main centres of Nadi and Suva. With some precautions and a bit of care, a cycle along the highway’s beautiful scenery would make the trip well worthwhile.

There are cycling clubs that organize cycles around the country all year round, and these include the Velocity Cycling Club, Waitui Cycles, BulaBikes, and also Fiji Amatuer Cycling Association. You can get more information about cycling in Fiji by getting in touch with these organisations.
