Matava - the Astrolabe Hideaway
Kadavu, Fiji’s fourth largest island situated 100km south of the main island Viti Levu is one of the few remaining undeveloped islands in Fiji. Having maintained its strong cultural values the general population leads fairly subsistent lifestyles.
Accommodation
Traditional thatched Fijian ’bures’ with additional timber polished floors, louvre windows, timber beds and private decks are nestled in the rainforest to offer privacy, comfort and superb ocean views. Oceanview bures offer spectacular panoramas of The Great Astrolabe Reef and surrounding offshore islands. Waterfront bures are nestled along the foreshore, immersed in beautiful tropical gardens and surrounded by lush rainforest.
Bathroom facilities and showers are available as private facilities in most bures. There are shared facilities for three bures. Solar power provides the lighting and gas heats the water in each private facility bure.
Dining
Meals at Matava are an imaginative blend of local and international cuisine. Dining takes place on the balcony of the 'bure levu', one of Fiji’s largest traditional structures where guests gather from around the world for papaya salad, mango chicken, coconut curries and sashimi while sharing conversation and friendship.
Meals are offered as a package; comprising a continental style breakfast, lunch, and a three-course dinner extravaganza.Local seasonal delicacies are always found in the menu as well as the days fresh produce.
Activities
Matava offers a full range of adventure and cultural activities including Diving, Fishing, Snorkelling, Kayaking, Trekking and participation in cultural and village events.
Trekking Walk through lush verdant rainforest ascending the hills to reveal stunning views of The Great Astrolabe Reef, then descend to beautiful white pristine beaches. There are no roads around Matava, only a network of paths that link one village to the next. Then plunge into one of the many cool, refreshing waterfalls and pools that slice down through the rugged highlands and watch as the local children leap from dizzying heights.
