Caqalai Island
This beautiful 14 acre coral island is located south of Ovalau in a sea area known as the Moturiki Passage. Its off the main tourist track and its the perfect place for all those that want to get away from it all and experience real laid back Fijian lifestyle.
Location
Transports are usually daily or will be arranged on demand. Please note that boat trips can depend on weather and tidal conditions. Please contact us for details.
Accommodation
You will be accommodated in Fijian Bures. These are thatched huts build in a traditional local way and located right by the beach, only a stone throw from the clear waters of the pacific. Bures are basic but comfortable in their own way. Beds have mosquito nets, linens are provided. Bures are cleaned every day.
The dormitory is also right next to the beach, it sleeps a max of 12 people in there.
Dining
Rates include food: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.
Local food available eg fresh fish, chicken, pork, dalo, cassava, rice, and also vegetarian meals. Look out for special Sunday 'lovo'. This is food prepared traditionally in an earth oven. Its delicious.
No alcohol sold on the island but you are welcome to bring your own.
Activities
Swimming, strolling on the beach, snorkelling, read a book, play volleyball against the locals, go fishing, just experience island life, visit Levuka the old capital for day trip, after dinner join the staff around the Kava (grog) bowl and listen to Fijian songs or sit around a bonfire on the beach with friends and watch the stars in a clear sky......
On Sundays join the locals on a trip to Niubasaga, visit the church and enjoy Fijian village hospitality.
Amenities
Facilities are shared. Toilets are flushed with a bucket from a drum next to the toilet. Bathing is with a bucket of water which is obtained from the rainwater tanks or a well.
