Ba
Updated: Monday, February 18, 2008
Ba is a town best known for its soccer and its manufacturing base. The town is built on the banks of the Ba River, after which it is named. For the longest time, Ba’s single lane bridge over the river caused major traffic problems for the town and the nation’s main highway (King’s Road). When the old bridge was washed away in floods during the 1990s, a decision was made to build a new bridge further downstream. This saw the main highway (King’s Road) bypassing Ba town altogether, easing congestion issues.

The "Soccer Ball", used to be a cafe
Ba lies 37 kilometres from Fiji’s second city of Lautoka and 62 kilometres from Nadi. Ba is an agricultural and manufacturing centre. The town itself is a thriving Indo-Fijian business centre. Sugarcane has long been the mainstay of the local economy, but over the past 15 years, manufacturing projects have been responsible for many new jobs in the area. Ba town is part of Ba Province, which is geographically the largest of Fiji’s 14 provinces.
Incorporated as a town in 1939, Ba is governed by an elected Town Council, whose members then elect a mayor from among themselves.
