Rotuma has since been considered a vital part of Fiji and indeed Rotuma has a seat on the Great Council of Chiefs - the indigenous body that has the constitutional duty of appointing the President and Vice President of Fiji. Rotumans also qualify for indigenous affirmative action including reserved scholarships, loans and other State-funded assistance.
Today, Rotumans number about 11,500, most of whom live outside Rotuma.
