Part Europeans
Updated: Monday, February 18, 2008
The kai lomas as part-Europeans are called in Fiji are a distinctive cultural group whose roots run deep into both the indigenous Fijian and European lines.
Many are descendants of white traders that came in from Australia, America and Europe who settled and took Fijian wives.
Part-Europeans can be characterised as generally easy-going with very western attitudes. But they generally tend to blend easily in several cultures speaking English and understanding Fijian, if not speaking it fluently. Both languages are used in everyday conversation with light moments shared in the tongue that best suits it. A good number of part-European families still make a living in communities like Levuka or Savusavu (on Vanua Levu), while the majority have scattered all over the country.
