Indians

There is good reason why a Fiji curry is still regarded by many people as the best in the world. It has the right mix of ingredients. Decades of merging Indian tradition and tropical life have resulted in many interesting facets to Fiji. People of Indian ethnicity constitute just under half the population of Fiji. A large number of people of Indian ethnicity who have migrated offshore also consider Fiji their homeland.
Indians arrived in Fiji first as indentured labourers brought to Fiji in the colonial era by British rulers. Other migrants from Gujarat and Punjab arrived later and continue to maintain distinct cultural and linguistic traditions.
Most of the culture, language, dress and culinary skills continue Indian tradition but these have also been modified to suit Fiji's tropical climate.
