Muslims in Fiji make up approximately 7 per cent of the total population (which placed Muslims at around 62,534 people at the last Census). A large segment of the Islamic community is made up of people of Indian origin, who were brought to the islands in the late 19th century to work plantations.

Of the total population that is of Indian ethnicity, around 16 per cent adhere to the Muslim faith. There are also a few hundred indigenous Fijians who have converted to Islam.
