Fijian Alphabet

Updated: Monday, February 18, 2008

The modern Fijian alphabet was devised by David Cargill using the Latin alphabet.

His findings provided the foundation for a spelling system that was not only economical but regular.

The Fijian alphabet is very similar to English but it doesn't have H, X and Z.

A (a) B (mb) C (th) D (nd) E (e) F (f) G (g) I (i) J (j) K (k) L (l) M (m)

N (n) O (o) P (p) Q (ng) R (r) S (s) T (t) U (u) V (v) W (w) Y (y)

Pronunciation of letters C, D, Q are different from that of English. For example C is pronounced (th) as in the. D and Q are pronounced with a (n) in front of them as nd and ng respectively.
